Remember jelly shoes? Now, I know they were trendy a few years ago — grown women were wearing them! I like to think they were getting nostalgic about their childhoods with that fashion choice. But really, I’m talking about when they were trendy way back in the 80s and early 90s. I called them my “Cinderella shoes.” They looked like glass slippers! I was (and still am) obsessed with Disney princesses, so of course I had to have them. I don’t even remember how many pairs I had.
I always got the clear ones with glitter specks on them because they looked most like a glass slipper. Were they comfy? Probably not in the blazing California sun (doesn’t plastic melt?), but I wore them religiously. And every time one broke, I’d beg my mom to get me another pair. They were my go-to shoe, when I wasn’t wearing slippers that looked like stuffed animals or boat shoes (which I hated wearing as a child, but now I need a pair — ain’t it always the way?)
Oddly enough, I never bought a new pair of jelly shoes for my grown-up feet when they were trendy a couple of years ago. I think I just wanted to keep jelly shoes a childhood classic. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get a pair this summer — clear ones, of course.
